Airports

SAN

The San Diego Airport (SAN) is conveniently located near downtown San Diego and a short 20-minute drive to La Jolla.

LAX

Depending on where you are coming from, you might find savings / more flight options at the Los Angeles airport (LAX), which is a 2.5 hour drive to San Diego (potentially more with traffic).

The Lodge at Torrey Pines

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is Josh's favorite hotel (and yes, he's biased because he worked there, but it's objectively extraordinary) and where he and Meghan will be staying. It is within walking distance of the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines.

The Lodge is one of the most sophisticated resorts in Southern California. Set against a stunning backdrop of rugged cliffs and adjacent to the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course, the AAA Five Diamond resort exceeds expectations with world-class dining, a full-service spa, and unprecedented service. It is like a museum of fine art. From original paintings by A.R. Valentien and Maurice Braun to the stained glass work from Judson Studios, the property reflects the importance of Californian artists.

The Lodge is within walking distance of the Torrey Pines State Reserve (stunning hike that leads down the cliffs to the ocean) and a 20-minute drive from downtown San Diego and the San Diego International Airport. While we do not have a discounted rate available for The Lodge, please see below for other discounted rate hotel options.

Things to Do

San Diego is known for it's laid-back attitude, beaches, surfers, burritos, and sun.

These are the top tourist destinations:

1. San Diego Zoo (also the San Diego Safari Park)

The San Diego Zoo is one of the top zoos in the world known for it's expansive exhibits and focus on conservation. The main zoo is conveniently located close to downtown, on the edge of Balboa park. The Safari Park is a 40-min drive but is worth it to experience the Safari-like tram, free range kangaroos and the only platypus outside of Australia.

2. SeaWorld

This is the original home of Shamu featuring a range of aquatic life, including orcas, in addition to theme park rides and other interactive experiences.

3. Legoland

This is another popular theme park and water park, mainly for kids, focused on the plastic blocks you know and love - legos!

4. Balboa Park

Balboa park is a historic urban cultural park located close to downtown. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens, and walking paths, it contains museums, theaters and other art centers. Visit the international village for regional snacks and chats with local volunteers from around the world.

5. La Jolla Cove & Village

If you are staying in La Jolla Village, like at the Inn by the Sea, walk down to The Cove. Here, you will find seals laying on the warm rocks and if you bring your swimsuit you can swim with them. Nearby is The Cave Store, featuring a hidden cave you can explore.

6. Wineries

Just outside of San Diego, you'll find Temecula, southern California's own wine country. Nearby Ramona is also known for wine and in October you'll find ciders, breweries and pumpkin patches.

Pro Tips for the Adventurous

1. Hike the Torrey Pines State Reserve

This fragile environment is home to one of the most rare pine trees of the world, the elegant Torrey pine (pinus Torreyana). The State Reserve consists of approximately 2,000 unspoiled acres of rugged canyons, colorful sandstone cliffs, and rich flora nestled along the beautiful Southern California Coast. Enjoy a hike through the State Reserve on rustic footpaths, which wind from the wooded hilltops to the sandy beach below.

2. Eat at Los Cuatros Milpas in Barrio Logan

Conde Nast called it "the gold standard for San Diego tacos". It's a true hole-in-the wall with extraordinary authentic Mexican food. Josh & family have been going there for years. Expect to wait in line to get in, and don't forget to ask for more flour tortillas (good enough to eat as its own meal).

3. Play golf at Torrey Pines Golf Course

Site of the 2008 and 2021 US Open, Torrey Pines is the most sought after golf course in Southern California. With a total of 36 holes between the world-famous South Course and newly redesigned North Course. The notable South Course, a Rees Jones beauty, is the site of the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open. Torrey Pines is set on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean and rewards players with stunning California coastline views as a backdrop.

4. Paraglide at the Torrey Pines Glider Port

Soar like a bird above the La Jolla bluffs at the Torrey Pines Gilderport, the most historic aviation site in North America with nearly 100 years of flying history

5. Order the "Drugstore Burger" at the Grill at Torrey Pines

The Grill is the casual dining option at The Lodge at Torrey Pines that embraces the nostalgia of cooking over an open flame. Savor the smoky flavors of dishes from the restaurant’s custom-built, wood-burning rotisserie and enjoy local craft beers on the patio with panoramic views of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

6. Eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner at A.R. Valentien

The Lodge's signature fine-dining restaurant highlights regional San Diego cuisine served in an elegant, indoor-outdoor dining room overlooking the 18th hole of the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course. Executive Chef Kelli Crosson uses only the best local provisions, and the menu changes frequently based on the availability of locally sourced ingredients. Whether you try breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it's all extraordinary (Josh has probably eaten there 200+ times). And if you eat dinner, definitely say yes to the biscuit--you won't be disappointed!
